It’s only Friday (for those of you who know this column is supposed to run on Saturdays), but I’m trying to make some changes to accommodate my new work schedule and new priorities, and the first one is to remove required weekend work. That doesn’t mean no work on the weekends — ha! — but it does free up my weekends for the personal projects and brainstorming that usually fall by the wayside when other work picks up.
With growing obligations and opportunities in other places, it’s difficult to find time to keep up a personal blog, and even more difficult to justify the time spent. A year ago, my blog was necessary to get my work in front of readers. Now, it’s an accessory to the other (dare I say “bigger”?) work I’m doing.
Every time I move — from central Wisco to Madison, from Madison to San Francisco, from SF to WI — I shed accessories to make room for the essentials. I get rid of earrings and rings and necklaces and shoes that I rarely wear (yet somehow accumulate), and just keep a few favorites that I can justify cramming into my suitcase. I have to do the same with my blog every time I move into a new phase of my career.
So I’m paring down the blog. I’m cutting the schedule from four (!) posts each week to one and inviting more regular guest bloggers and interviewees — whom I’m super-excited to have. This frees me up to focus on building my (paying) freelance career.
